The Ambitions of a Simple Youth

Hi! My name is Rebeca Baptista, but everyone calls me Becka. I am currently a Journalism major in the Moody College of Communications at The University of Texas at Austin. I hope to use the many skills that I will acquire here at UT throughout my journey to become a criminal prosecutor.

So, a little bit about me. Where to begin?

I was born in Miami, FL in the great year of 1994. I grew up in Boca Raton, FL (a rather small city bustling with retired persons who inhabit golf courses and condominiums). Although Florida will always be my forever home, I have spent a great deal of my life in the
grandiose state of Texas.

I did most of my schooling in San Antonio, graduating from the Texas Military Institute in 2013, and now I come to you as a proud resident of Austin, TX.

The whole college experience has been interesting thus far, but I am well aware - and quite excited - that many more events will dare to change my life in the coming three and a half years I have left at UT. Coming from a person who gained her inspiration to become a criminal prosecutor from a television series (Law and Order: SVU, to be exact), I know I will have many more influences in life that will shape me as a person, both professionally and personally.

In terms of looking to the distant future, I have huge plans for myself. My ultimate goal in life is to become a Supreme Court Justice. Pretty far fetched, right? I would have to be on the good side of the President at the time. I would have to be appealing to a good chunk of the American population. Then, I would have to pass a Senate confirmation hearing. That sure is a lot of pressure, but it is my dream. A dream I plan on achieving with full force.

So, why would I want to retire at the age of 65 and simply soak up that Boca Raton sun when I could continue to be a part of an incredible institution that enforces the constitutional principles which shaped this great nation? I would never leave doing what I love for a hearty session of lounging. I would much rather live out the rest of my days working for what I believe in. Boca will always be there, but my life is constantly moving, and I need to make the most of it.

Now you know a little bit about me. To finish off, I'd like to leave you with the theme song of my inspiration. Feel free to hum along. You know you want to.
