I was recently reading an interview with ever-astute frontman of Vampire Weekend, Ezra Koenig, where he says "blogging" as a word sounds dated. I think he's right; Tumblr-er, Twitter-er, and Medium-er, or whatever, sound fresher. But I do believe this is an empowering tool, and I still enjoy sharing stories. As the resilience of print journalism has showed, coolness isn't everything.
What would I like to share as journalist? Well, I did write my college essay for a certain school about covering music in the future. (I didn't get in.) I stand by that. Now, though, I'm much interested in exposing the scenes and people behind them - not writing rote news stories or reviewing records. Context is important, and it's also infinitely more interesting to me than hearing someone dissect their impressions of a song when I can listen to it myself. I'd like to shed some light on that through words and, increasingly, photos.
Below are a few things that I hope illustrate where I’m coming from - or where I'm going. All of them, except the video, were done by me. Please do not steal them and sell them for profit. I care about the people depicted for one reason or another or a bunch of reasons put together. (By the way, none of the people shown are me. I am usually - or, it would seem, all the time - behind the lens rather than in front.)
