On April 5th, 2014, SMILE, a UT student organization, held Brave the Shave, a fundraiser for pediatric cancer research where participants had their heads shaved on the steps of the tower to show support. Two hundred UT students and Austinites attended the event which featured free food, crafts, and other attractions.
