Do Origins Even Matter, Really?

I never know how to respond to the question, "where are you from?"
It is an open-ended question, really; is the person asking where I am originally from, as in born in? Or where I have spent the most time residing in? Or where I currently reside? Perhaps I am the only one who over-thinks this question, but for someone who has spent her life living in three of her favorite cities, it is a tough question.

I was originally born in Boston, MA, the home to one of the greatest baseball teams out there (though perhaps I am a bit biased). Even though I only lived in Boston for a few years, I adopted part of the NorthEastern drawl, or at least to the extent that when people query where I'm from, I assume that is the answer they are looking for.

After living in Boston for three years, my family moved to Seattle, WA. We stayed there for eight years, which was enough for me to consider Seattle my true hometown. There is simply so much to love about the city, from its fantastic coffee breweries to its eclectic Pike Place Market, where fish are tossed about, all day, every day.

I moved to Austin when I was eleven years old, and have been living here ever since. Although Seattle and Boston are both a strong part of who I am, after living in Austin for nine years, and planning on at least three more while I'm at the University of Texas, I am proud to say that above all else, I am an Austinite.
