Video Project: Reese Miller, Kat Sampson, Adam Homeyer, "Kombucha"

Kombucha has been on the market for over a decade but why is it just now gaining popularity and notoriety? Well to start off, the drink used to be considered alcoholic and was labeled as thus. Buddha’s Brew, the Austin-based kombucha company, was one of the first brewers to lower the alcoholic content to virtually zero and up the probiotic count to 19 billion. Because of these vital changes, their drinks have gained popularity and have recently expanded to local HEBs.

Cream Whiskers VideoStory: Kate Beispel, Reanna Zuniga, Erin Altieri

Watch the Video Story here

This video gives viewers an exclusive inside look into Cream Whiskers, a cream puff bakery located in the heart of West Campus. Opened just six months ago, we decided to take a closer look into this unknown treasure, by interviewing employees, customers, and getting an inside view of the bakery. In this video story, J302F students Erin Altieri, Kate Beispel, and Reanna Zuniga discover what makes Cream Whiskers a place that students want to go to, whether it be the atmosphere, the food, the people, or a combination of all factors.

The 4th Annual Wagathon Walkathon

The 4th Annual Wagathon Walkathon

The 4th Annual Wagathon Walkathon was held on March 30, 2014 at the Hill Country Galleria in Austin, Texas. The walkathon was put on to support and raise awareness for Austin Pets Alive!, which is a non-profit, no kill humane society organization. As well as promoting some more specific animal shelters, like The Basset Rescue Group. The walkathon’s main supporter was Austin Subaru, Continental Auto Group, and was also sponsored by local businesses like Jamba Juice. This particular event is one of Austin Pets Alive!’s best fundraising and awareness events. Volunteers will bring some of the animal shelter dogs out, put an “adopt me!” vest on, and try to find some of their furry friends new homes.

UT's University Theatre Guild
By Tori Townsend and Alessandra Rey

UT's University Theatre Guild has become a creative outlet for students that would like to act as a hobby, not a career. This theatre organization is also completely student-run. We talked to UTG President Kyle Winkelmann and UTG member Ryan Hooker about their personal experiences within the group. Winkelmann is also directing the upcoming comedy, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculaton. In our interview, he discussed how a student-run production has positively impacted the cast.

Fundraising campaign celebrates mascot's birthday

Fundraising campaign celebrates mascots birthday

Engineering students celebrate with their Patron Saint every year for his birthday -- which falls on April Fools' Day. As a tradition of what started out as a prank and soon became a million dollar fundraising campaign, the Cockrell School of Engineering hands out free cake to all students who stop by. This year, students were given a chance to meet and speak with Alec, their saint while learning more about giving back to their school. The birthday bash was put on by the Friends of Alec a fundraising organization that focuses on raising funds for the school to continue funding engineering education.

Welcome to UT Austin: Helpful Hints for New Students

By: Alicia Colon-Jimenez, Eva Frederick, and Jeanette Perez

Being a new student at the University of Texas at Austin can be a scary experience. That’s why we decided to create a short, informative video that will provide freshmen and transfer students with some helpful tips for adjusting to this new environment. We held interviews with two students and a student ambassador, hoping to help new students feel more at home at UT.

Zilker Woodland Faerie Trail and Garden

The video story of the Faerie Garden of Zilker Park located in Austin, TX, describes The second annual Woodland Faerie Trail, which features faerie homes and gardens created by Austin area gardeners, architects, and others. Anyone can enter a Faerie home for this annual attraction. Besides the magnificent miniature whimsical architecture, the Faerie garden includes many kid-friendly events such as scheduled tea parties and dress up days. Besides the garden's enticement to children, many adults come to view the garden as well, and take a step beck into their youth to enjoy a botanical Disneyland. Through interviews of visitors and staff, as well as the incorporation of text slides throughout the assignment, viewers' interpretation of the story's objective is enhanced.

Colors Paint Culture

By, Vanessa Pulido, Kindell Johnston, Carson Davenport

Holi is the Indian festival celebrating the arrival of the spring season. Widely recognized as the Festival of Color, this event involves throwing colored powder, called rang, on friends and family. The Hindu Students Association is putting on the largest student celebration at the LBJ Lawns with entertainment by a DJ. We interviewed individuals who went to the event for fun as well as individuals who understood the significance and value of the Holi festival.

Texas 4000: Riding for a Cause by Rebeca Baptista and Kirsten Kumar

Team: Kirsten Kumar and Rebeca Baptista

Texas 4000 is a bicycle tour that stretches from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska over each summer. The goal of the trek is to increase cancer awareness and raise funds for research. Each participant has a goal of how much money to raise and must meet it by a determined deadline. The riders train extensively to prepare their bodies and their minds for the 4,500-mile long atlas ride. We interviewed three participants. One, Brooke Willard, rode in the summer of 2012 and offered us an experienced perspective on the ride. The remaining two, Abz Zeitler and Tatiana Jessen, shared a hopeful outlook on their future journey.

Story Idea: Cream Whiskers Bakery by Kate Beispel, Reanna Zuniga, and Erin Altieri

Our story idea is a profile on Cream Whiskers, a cream puff bakery located in West Campus that has been open for about 6 months. This is a location that goes unnoticed, but has a loyal customer base. We plan to interview employees, customers, and get a feel for the atmosphere of the bakery. Additionally, we are interested in the process that goes into making these cream puffs.

Subject:  ISOJ - volunteers needed

As you may already know, the Knight Center will be hosting the 15th International Symposium on Online Journalism next Friday and Saturday.

This event brings nearly 400 media executives, reporters and journalism researchers together from around the world.  We have guests from more than 40 countries coming, including delegations from Korea and Latin America.

The event is fully sold out and at maximum capacity.  The Knight Center is looking for volunteers to help out during the conference, April 4-5.

There is also an ISOJ kickoff mixer Thursday, April 3 at Hole in the Wall, and a few 21+ volunteers are also needed to help with registration and check in there.  Once registration is complete, you'd be welcome to enjoy a beverage and some snacks East Side King.

If you're interested in either opportunity, please email Clare Boyle in the Knight Center (clare.boyle@austin.utexas.edu) or stop by BMC 3.212.

Thanks!

Video Story Idea - Rebeca Baptista and Kirsten Kumar

Story:

The story Kirsten Kumar and I want to do is Texas 4000. It is a bicycle tour that goes from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska over the summer of 2015. The goal is to raise cancer awareness and raise money for research. Each participant has a goal of how much money to raise for research to find a cure and must meet it by a deadline. They must train extensively to prepare their bodies to ride their bikes for 4,000 miles from Austin to Anchorage over one summer. We would interview three participants to see the dynamic of why people choose to participate in Texas 4K.

Structure of the Story:
We were thinking to start off with some shots of the athletes and participants training in the gym to show the hard work they put forth in achieving their goal to raise money and bike from Austin to Alaska.
Interview with one of the participants, Tatiana Jessen to see why she's doing it, how she raised money, and how she trains.
Cut back to her in the gym
Introduce next participant Brooke Willard to see her motives and strategies
Cut back to them in the gym/riding the bike/training
Then introduce Abz Zeitler to ask her feelings toward it and how she is working for the cause and how she is involved with several other activities yet manages to fit this in.
Cut back to her training
Then do a "montage" of each of their training and their smiling faces with their jerseys on with names underneath
Closing shot with one of them with a tower view putting a hook 'em sign with jersey on

How this works with the text:
We would start out with shots of the athletes training to describe what the program is and how much dedication it takes.
The interviews speak for themselves, but we would probably include the participants ages next to their names.
The "montage" would work with the text to provide faces to the dedication and the hardcore program that is Texas 4K and to show that no participant is exactly the same and how they don't do it for the exact same reasons as each other.
The closing shot of one of the participants with the tower, hook em sign, and Texas 4K jersey with something like "We are Texas and we ride for cancer: Texas 4000" would be a nice way to end the video to leave a good message and a good representation of the organization.

Potential Sources:
1. Tatiana Jessen - a freshman also involved in Camp Texas
2. Abigail "Abz" Zeitler - a sophomore, also involved in Alpha Chi Omega, Camp Texas, and Texas Spirits
3. Brooke Willard - a senior who has participated in Texas 4000 before.

b
The structure of our story is basic with an introduction voice over to introduce the topic and speaker, followed by an interview with an employee, then the perspective of a consumer, ending with a closing voice over.
c
While I briefly describe the presence of alcohol, high probiotic count and HEB distribution, the video allows different perspectives and an in depth look. One of the reasons there is a video component and not just a write-up is because of the location. The farmers market in Austin is usually bustling with costumers willing to sample a multitude of products. With the video component you are able to witness the atmosphere making it easier to imagine yourself in the costumers shoes. The sounds, combined with the visuals, enhance the experience. When you see people like you sampling a product that may seem foreign, you are likelier to do the same.
d
          Potential interviewees
a.     Buddha’s Brew employee
b.     Regular costumer
c.      First time sampler
